Sam Darnold MIN QB
Vikings' Sam Darnold: Vikings won't rush to name starting QB
9h agoThe Vikings could begin the season with Darnold as the team's starting quarterback despite taking J.J. McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, ESPN reports. "We're not going to rush his development," said general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. "We're just going to do what's best for the Vikings in the short and long term."
Darnold signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Vikings as a short-term veteran starter or backup. It's hard to handicap when McCarthy may take over the starting job this soon after the draft, but it's notable the Vikings are trying to reduce expectations. Expect the quarterback battle for the Week 1 starting job to commence this summer. Still, odds are Darnold will only be the starter for a few weeks at most if McCarthy is healthy and making progress.

Trey Knox 2005 TE
Vikings' Trey Knox: Lands in Minnesota
12h agoKnox signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent Saturday.
After four years at Arkansas, Knox transferred to South Carolina for his fifth-year senior season. He compiled a 37-312-2 receiving line for the Gamecocks. He switched positions from wide receiver to tight end in 2021. Knox joins a tight end room that includes T.J. Hockenson, Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt and Nick Muse in Minnesota.

Lideatrick Griffin 2005 WR
Raiders' Lideatrick Griffin: Signs with Silver and Black
12h agoGriffin signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent Saturday.
"Tulu" stands at 5-foot-10 and 181 pounds and ran a 4.43 forty at the combine after leading Mississippi State in receiving with a 50-658-4 line as a senior. His main selling point for the Raiders could be his returner skills after he showed some electricity with the ball in his hands during college.
-
Carter Bradley 2005 QB
Raiders' Carter Bradley: Finds work with Las Vegas
12h agoThe Raiders signed Bradley as an undrafted free agent Saturday.
Bradley has good size at 6-foot-3 and 213 pounds and spent the final two years of his college career at South Alabama following four years in Toledo's program. He threw for 5,996 yards at South Alabama, amassing 47 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. In Las Vegas, Bradley slides in at the bottom of the depth chart behind Gardner Minshew, Aidan O'Connell and Anthony Brown.
-
Daijun Edwards 2005 RB
Steelers' Daijun Edwards: Inks deal with Pittsburgh
12h agoThe Steelers signed Edwards as an undrafted free agent Saturday.
Edwards was just a one-year starter at Georgia and overall functioned as part of a backfield committee. He concluded his four-year collegiate career with a 391-2,082-24 rushing line. Edwards is strong in pass-protection and joins a Pittsburgh backfield that is led by Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren and newcomer Cordarrelle Patterson.
-
Blake Watson 2005 RB
Blake Watson: Lands with Denver
13h agoWatson is slated to sign with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports.
Watson spent five years at Old Dominion before transferring to Memphis for his super-senior season. He led the Tigers in rushing with 192-1,152-14 on the ground and added 53-480-3 as a receiver, earning All-AAC honors. Watson joins a crowded Denver backfield depth chart that includes Javonte Williams, Samaje Perine, Jaleel McLaughlin and fifth-round rookie Audric Estime.

Brady Singer KC SP
Royals' Brady Singer: Solid in no-decision
5m agoSinger didn't factor in the decision Saturday at Detroit after he allowed one run on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out six.
The right-hander gave up a run on a walk and a triple during the second inning but blanked the Tigers in his other four frames. Despite the strong run prevention, it was the third straight start with three walks for Singer, who generated just eight swings-and-misses Saturday. The 27-year-old has enjoyed a strong first month of the season with a 2.62 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 34:13 K:BB across 34.1 innings.
-
Davis Wendzel TEX 3B
Rangers' Davis Wendzel: Homers in loss
6m agoWendzel entered Saturday's 8-4 loss to the Reds late and went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run in his lone plate appearance.
The game was out of hand by the time Wendzel replaced second baseman Marcus Semien in the top of the ninth inning. He delivered a two-run shot as part of a four-run inning that made the game closer than it appeared. Wendzel has made four starts since his contract selected earlier this month with the previous one coming April 19.

Avisail Garcia MIA RF
Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Heads to injured list
10m agoThe Marlins placed Garcia on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left hamstring strain, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
The veteran outfielder presumably suffered the injury Saturday against the Nationals, as he went 1-for-2 with a strikeout before being replaced by a pinch hitter. The severity of the injury is unclear, but Garcia will be sidelined until at least May 8. Dane Myers was called up in a corresponding move.

Andres Munoz SEA RP
Mariners' Andres Munoz: Secures fourth save
13m agoMunoz earned the save over the Diamondbacks on Saturday, pitching a perfect ninth inning while striking out one.
Munoz entered the game with a two-run lead in the ninth and went 1-2-3 through the heart of Arizona's lineup to secure his fourth save of the season. The right-handed reliever has now converted his last two save attempts after being tagged with the loss in extras against the Rockies a week ago and has not allowed a baserunner over that brief stretch.
-
Slade Cecconi ARI SP
Diamondbacks' Slade Cecconi: Another strong outing
19m agoCecconi (1-1) took the loss Saturday against the Mariners, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings.
Cecconi stifled Seattle's lineup for most of the contest, retiring 11 of the first 12 batters he faced, with seven of those batters going down on strikes. The 24-year-old right-hander would still get tagged with the loss after allowing an RBI single in the fifth, though he's now gone six innings in each of his first two starts. He's only surrendered three runs over that stretch while posting an 11:1 K:BB.
-
Jason Foley DET RP
Tigers' Jason Foley: Holds on for eighth save
19m agoFoley allowed two runs on three hits and no walks during the ninth inning to earn the save in Saturday's 6-5 win against the Royals.
The right-hander was staked a three-run lead and needed all of it as he surrendered his first earned runs of the campaign Saturday. Foley remains perfect in eight save chances this season and has a 1.50 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB across 12 innings.
-
Evan Mobley CLE PF
Cavaliers' Evan Mobley: Strong defensive effort
3m agoMobley finished Saturday's 112-89 loss to the Magic in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with 14 points (6-13 FG, 2-2 FT), nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals across 32 minutes.
Mobley blocked multiple shots for the third time through four matchups against Orlando and added multiple steals for the first time during that stretch. Through four postseason games, the defensive-minded forward has averaged 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, 1.8 assists and 0.8 steals in 30.5 minutes.
-
Max Strus CLE SG
Cavaliers' Max Strus: Another quiet outing
6m agoStrus produced seven points (3-5 FG, 1-3 3Pt), one rebound, three assists and one steal in 30 minutes during Saturday's 112-89 loss to the Magic in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Strus has failed to score more than seven points in four straight games to start the postseason. He's shooting 38.5 percent from the field during that stretch. Strus grabbed only two rebounds during the two losses in Orlando after totaling 18 boards across the two wins in Cleveland.
-
Donovan Mitchell CLE SG
Cavaliers' Donovan Mitchell: Falls flat in second half
8m agoMitchell produced 18 points (5-14 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 7-7 FT), one rebound, six assists and three steals over 36 minutes during Saturday's 112-89 loss to the Magic in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Mitchell scored all 18 points in the first half and went 0-for-4 from the field with four turnovers in the second half as Orlando cruised to a Game 4 victory, evening the series at 2-2. After totaling 53 points (20-43 FG) through the first two games in Cleveland, Mitchell scored only 31 points during the two losses in Orlando. Through four matchups, Mitchell is shooting only 42.5 percent from the field.
-
Darius Garland CLE PG
Cavaliers' Darius Garland: Modest production again
12m agoGarland accumulated 14 points (5-11 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 2-3 FT), three rebounds, six assists and one block over 32 minutes during Saturday's 112-89 loss to the Magic in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Garland has yet to score more than 15 points through four postseason games and is shooting only 41.9 percent from the field during that stretch. Following back-to-back losses in Orlando to even the series, Cleveland needs more offensive production out of its point guard if they're going to advance to the next round. During the regular season, Garland averaged 18.0 points on 44.6 percent shooting, including 37.1 percent from deep.
-
Luke Kornet BOS C
Celtics' Luke Kornet: Gets five minutes in return
1h agoKornet (calf) tallied two points (2-2 FT) and one rebound across five minutes Saturday in the Celtics' 104-84 win over the Heat in Game 3 of the first-round playoff series.
After Kornet was ruled out of the Celtics' playoff opener April 21, head coach Joe Mazzulla labeled the backup center as week-to-week after he strained his right calf during a practice. Ultimately, Kornet missed just two games on account of the issue, as he took back a small role in the Boston rotation in his return to action Saturday. Kornet is unlikely to see his playing time grow substantially as the Celtics' playoff run continues.
-
LeBron James LAL SF
Lakers' LeBron James: Shines with 30-point game Saturday
10h agoJames ended with 30 points (14-23 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT), five rebounds, four assists, one block and three steals over 39 minutes during Saturday's 119-108 victory over the Nuggets in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
The Lakers are still alive in the series against the Nuggets, and James became just the fourth player in NBA history to record a 30-point playoff game at the age of 39 or older, joining Reggie Miller, Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on that exclusive list. James has surpassed the 25-point mark in each of the four games in this series, and the Lakers will need him to be at his best once again if they want to avoid elimination in Game 5 on Monday.
-
Brandon Montour FLA D
Panthers' Brandon Montour: Heating up in playoffs
37m agoMontour registered an assist and four blocked shots versus the Lightning in Game 4 on Saturday, but it still wasn't enough, as the Panthers suffered a 6-3 loss.
After being held without a point in the first two games of the conference quarterfinals, Montour stacked a goal and two helpers between Game 3 and Game 4. The eighth-year defenseman has always had a high ceiling in terms of offensive potential, but there had been a fair number of detractors until Montour's eye-popping 73-point campaign surfaced in 2022-23. He had offseason shoulder surgery and missed the first 16 games of the recently completed regular season, leveling back down to a half-point-per game average. In this playoff series, Montour is averaging 23:26 of ice time with 2:27 on the man advantage. This Panthers team will have another crack at eliminating the Lightning at home for Game 5 on Monday.
-
Brayden Point TB C
Lightning's Brayden Point: Three-point effort in Game 4
1h agoPoint scored a goal and added two assists, one on the power play, during Game 4's 6-3 win over the Panthers on Saturday.
The 28-year-old center had a hand in both of Steven Stamkos' tallies and fired home his own goal late in the first period to give Tampa Bay a 3-0 lead. Point has two goals and five points through the series' first four games, and the Bolts may need another strong performance from him in Game 5 on Monday to avoid elimination.
-
Nikita Kucherov TB RW
Lightning's Nikita Kucherov: Three helpers in Saturday's win
1h agoKucherov recorded three assists, one on the power play, in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Panthers in Game 4.
Two of the helpers came in the third period as the Lightning put the game away. Kucherov is still looking for his first goal of the postseason, but he's found the scoresheet in all four contests so far while collecting six assists. He may need to come up big again in Game 5 on Monday if Tampa Bay is going to avoid elimination again.
-
Brandon Hagel TB LW
Lightning's Brandon Hagel: Three points in Game 4
1h agoHagel scored two goals, one shorthanded and the other the game-winner, and added a power-play assist Saturday in a 6-3 victory over the Panthers in Game 4.
After setting up Steven Stamkos for the game's opening tally midway through the first period, Hagel followed with his own a few minutes later before giving the Lightning a 4-1 lead in the second. The 25-year-old had managed only one goal and zero assists through the first three games of the series, and his offensive eruption helped Tampa Bay avoid a first-round sweep. Hagel will look to stay locked in Monday for Game 5.
-
Mikhail Sergachev TB D
Lightning's Mikhail Sergachev: Notches helper in return
1h agoSergachev (leg) picked up an assist and added two blocked shots and a hit in 17:03 of ice time during Game 4's 6-3 win over the Panthers on Saturday.
Seeing his first game action since fracturing his left leg in multiple places Feb. 7, Sergachev's surprising and early return gave the Lightning an emotional boost and helped them avoid getting swept out of the first round. The 25-year-old blueliner didn't see his usual workload, but that's to be expected given his long layoff. He'll likely see similar ice time Monday in Game 5.
-
Nick Paul TB C
Lightning's Nick Paul: Secures crucial win for Bolts
1h agoPaul netted a power-play goal in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Panthers for Game 4 of the conference quarterfinals.
The Lightning actually had a two-man advantage at the time, with Paul collecting his own rebound at the top of the cage for a backhand insurance tally. Paul broke out offensively in the regular season, adding 24 goals, 22 assists and 14 power-play points -- those were all career-high marks for the versatile forward, who commanded a seven-year, $22.05 million deal with the Lightning in July of 2022.
